A credit score is a numerical representation of a consumer’s potential level of risk at a particular point in time, based on information contained in their credit file. When a consumer applies for a loan or credit, the lender will request their credit report and score, and will use the score to quickly determine the potential risk in granting the loan or credit.. The logic to calculate the score is very sophisticated, and the entire credit report is evaluated every time a score is created. Because the score is based on the dynamic content of a credit file, a consumer’s score can change frequently.
Each of the national credit reporting agencies offers credit scores, which allow lenders to better assess certain factors in a consumer's credit report. A consumer's credit score may vary depending on the credit reporting agency and the score model requested. The score included with a credit report from CoreLogic Consumer Services is calculated in a similar way, and is based on the same information in the credit file from the three national credit reporting agencies. It allows the consumer to see how they may be viewed as a credit risk to lenders. In addition to the score, the consumer receives score "factors" to explain why their score is not higher.
